Tiny Intellectuals: Early Childhood Learning at its Best

A terrific preschool is intellectual without being academic. It invites children to explore ideas, pose and find answers to their own questions, and participate in long-term projects. What such a preschool does not do is subject children to developmentally inappropriate direct instruction. In his keynote address, Alfie Kohn considers the broad outlines of a rich early-childhood curriculum, which offers plenty of opportunities for kids to learn together (not just individually) and to make decisions (rather than just following directions).
